Nereida lives in the San Pedro neighborhood of Bluefields, Nicaragua with her husband Jorge and four children. Nereida is a school teacher and Jorge is a carpenter in one of the city’s workshops.
Although they have a well in the backyard, the water is contaminated with human organic and inorganic waste. To find safe drinking water, the family must either purchase bottled water or walk to the communal well.
Thanks to the new filter provided by Neil, Nereida and her family can now safely drink the water from their own well, decreasing the time and money spent finding alternative sources. According to Nereida: “The filter is good. Every day we filter water. The water from our well is dirty, but when it gets out of the filter it is crystalline [crystal clear].”
